Pass notes No 2943: Tibetan mastiff – The Guardian

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

A red Tibetan mastiff has become the world’s most expensive dog.

Age: As a breed, ancient; in dog years, incalculable.

Appearance: Oversized Aslan plush toy, fresh from being washed and dried with a Manchester United jersey.

Funny looking lion. That’s because it’s a dog.

Cute, though. How much for one of them? One million pounds.

A million! What’s it made of? It’s a dog. It’s made of dog.

You mean that thing is real? Yes. He’s Hong Dong (meaning “big splash”), an 11-month-old red Tibetan mastiff who was recently bought by a Chinese coal baron for 10m yuan (£945,000), making him the world’s most expensive dog.

What’s the world’s second most expensive dog? Another Tibetan mastiff called Red Lion was valued at £915,000 last year.

Inflation, that’s what it is. Perhaps, but Hong Dong has been described as a perfect specimen, and should be able to command stud fees of up to £10,000 a go.

Sounds like a business I should get into. Can I borrow a million quid? I’ll get it straight back to you. In Britain, alas, Tibetan mastiff puppies sell for less than £1,000.

Why do people want these giant red dogs in the first place? They’re considered holy and rather auspicious. Tibetans believed them to be the reincarnated souls of monks and nuns.

What else? For a million quid, there must be something else. Well, they’re meant to be good with children.

Unless it can drive them to school, I’m not interested. Actually, even if it can I’m not interested. It seems that in China the breed has become something of a status symbol among the super-rich, a trend that has driven up prices.

I’m guessing they’re also quite expensive to run. They do eat a lot. Tibetan Mastiffs have been known to reach 20st. And they live rather a long time, up to 14 years.

Do say: “Fetch boy! Fetch up to £10,000 per lady-visit, and quick!”

Don’t say: “Evening, Mr Hucknall. May I take your coat?”

Radiation leaking from Japan’s quake-hit nuclear

Saturday, March 12th, 2011

FUKUSHIMA, Japan (Reuters) – Radiation leaked from a damaged Japanese nuclear reactor north of Tokyo on Saturday, the government said, after an explosion blew the roof off the facility in the wake of a massive earthquake.

The developments raised fears of a meltdown at the plant as officials scrambled to contain what could be the worst nuclear disaster since the Chernobyl explosion in 1986 that shocked the world.

The Japanese plant was damaged by Friday’s 8.9-magnitude earthquake, which sent a 10-meter (33-foot) tsunami ripping through towns and cities across the northeast coast. Japanese media estimate that at least 1,300 people were killed.

“We are looking into the cause and the situation and we’ll make that public when we have further information,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said after confirming the explosion and radiation leak at the plant.

Edano said an evacuation radius of 10 km (6 miles) from the stricken 40-year-old Daiichi 1 reactor plant in Fukushima prefecture was adequate, but an hour later the boundary was extended to 20 km (13 miles). TV footage showed vapor rising from the plant, 240 km (150 miles) north of Tokyo.

Along Japan’s northeast coast, rescue workers searched through the rubble of destroyed buildings, cars and boats, looking for survivors in hardest-hit areas such as the city of Sendai, 300 km (180 miles) northeast of Tokyo.

Dazed residents hoarded water and huddled in makeshift shelters in near-freezing temperatures. Aerial footage showed buildings and trains strewn over mudflats like children’s toys.

“All the shops are closed, this is one of the few still open. I came to buy and stock up on diapers, drinking water and food,” Kunio Iwatsuki, 68, told Reuters in Mito city, where residents queued outside a damaged supermarket for supplies.

Across the coastline, survivors clambered over nearly impassable roads. In Iwanuma, not far from Sendai, people spelled S.O.S. out on the roof of a hospital surrounded by water, one of many desperate scenes.

The earthquake and tsunami, and now the radiation leak, present Japan’s government with its biggest challenge in a generation.

The explosion at Chernobyl’s nuclear plant’s fourth reactor in 1986 sent thousands of tons of toxic nuclear dust billowing across the Ukraine, Russia and Belarus. It was the worst civil nuclear disaster.

The blast at the Japanese nuclear facility came as plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) worked desperately to reduce pressures in the core of the reactor.

The company has had a rocky past in an industry plagued by scandal. In 2002, the president of the country’s largest power utility was forced to resign along with four other senior executives, taking responsibility for suspected falsification of nuclear plant safety records.

NHK television and Jiji news agency said the outer structure of the reactor building that houses the reactor appeared to have blown off, but nuclear experts said this did not necessarily mean the nuclear reactor had been breached.

Earlier the operator released what it said was a tiny amount of radioactive steam to reduce the pressure and the danger was minimal because tens of thousands of people had already been evacuated from the vicinity.

Reuters journalists were in Fukushima prefecture, about 70 km (40 miles) from the plant. Other media have reported police roadblocks in the area to prevent people getting closer.

INTERNATIONAL RELIEF EFFORT

Friday’s tremor was so huge that thousands fled their homes from coastlines around the Pacific Rim, as far away as North and South America, fearful of a tsunami.

Most appeared to have been spared anything more serious than some high waves, unlike Japan’s northeast coastline which was hammered by the huge tsunami that turned houses and ships into floating debris as it surged into cities and villages, sweeping aside everything in its path.

“I thought I was going to die,” said Wataru Fujimura, a 38-year-old sales representative in Koriyama, Fukushima, north of Tokyo and close to the area worst hit by the quake.

“Our furniture and shelves had all fallen over and there were cracks in the apartment building, so we spent the whole night in the car … Now we’re back home trying to clean.”

In one of the worst-hit residential areas, people buried under rubble could be heard calling out for rescue, Kyodo news agency reported earlier.

The international community started to send disaster relief teams on Saturday to help Japan, with the United Nations sending a group to help coordinate work.

The disaster struck as the world’s third-largest economy had been showing signs of reviving from an economic contraction in the final quarter of last year. It raised the prospect of major disruptions for many key businesses and a massive repair bill running into tens of billions of dollars.

Toyota Motor Corp, the world’s largest carmaker, said it would suspend operations at all of its 12 factories in Japan on Monday to confirm the safety of its employees.

Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology said the earth’s axis shifted 25 cm as a result of the earthquake, and the U.S. Geological Survey said the main island of Japan had shifted 2.4 meters.

The earthquake was the fifth most powerful to hit the world in the past century. It surpassed the Great Kant quake of September 1, 1923, which had a magnitude of 7.9 and killed more than 140,000 people in the Tokyo area.

The 1995 Kobe quake caused $100 billion in damage and was the most expensive natural disaster in history.

Dustin Zito Photos: Real World Las Vegas 2011 Star Gay Porn Past – NowPublic

Dustin Zito of the Real World Las Vegas 2011 Has a Bit of a Secret. He Worked In Gay Porn. Here are Some Dustin Zito Photos

The new season of Real World: Back To Las Vegas debuted on March 9, 2011 and it featured pretty much what you expected: 20-somethings getting drunk and hooking up.

One thing you can always expect from the Real World is some sort of sexual-orientation angle. We’ve seen plenty of gay, straight, lesbian and bisexual housemates over the years.

Real World Las Vegas 2011 cast member Dustin Zito threw in a new wrinkle: he is straight but admits to having done gay porn.

Dustin Zito claims to have been featured on websites with names like FratMen.com and FratPad.com, which featured “an uncensored look at a house of attractive guys living together.”

Such a revelation hasn’t seemed to hurt his dating life. In the Real World Las Vegas 2011 season opener, Dustin Zito hooked up with roommate Heather.

‘The Real World Las Vegas’ Season 25 Premiere Recap – TV Squad

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

The Real World Las Vegas['The Real World Las Vegas' Season 25, Episode 1]‘The Real World’ has chosen to mark its 25th season in the sinningest of cities — Las Vegas.

Nearly a decade after the first go-round in Sin City, though, the latest ‘Real World’ installment doesn’t really seem all that scandalous.

Sure, the cast is young, tan, beautiful, reality-TV savvy and, most of all, drunk. But in a post-’Jersey Shore’ world, is that enough anymore?

The cast is predictably diverse, chock full of small-town girls, country bumpkins and street-smart PYTs. Honestly, this first episode seems specifically designed to air clips of the castmates making bold statements like “I will not go to a strip club” and ” I don’t want to hook up with my roommates” simply to foreshadow the fact that those things will inevitably happen at some point during the season.

The house, as always, looks like the most glorious Ikea showroom ever, only with working fixtures and a puzzlingly large amount of aquariums.

First impressions-wise, the roommates don’t seem terribly interesting.

• Naomi was introduced as the requisite hardened city girl, but she seems relatively sweet and quiet during this episode and in the scenes from the rest of the season. At the very least, she seems like a good ally for Nany (or, conversely, an enabler rooting for Nany to cheat on her boyfriend).

• Speaking of Nany, the drop-dead gorgeous community college student is pretty much the spitting image of Daniella Alonso, amIrite? She has a boyfriend of six years, so the logical question is how long until she cheats with Adam?

• Adam was shot and spent three years in juvy. He is a bad boy, yet insists on telling girls that he’s shy and has no game while slyly admitting in the confessional that he usually has seven girlfriends at a time.

After the first roommate night out, Adam told Nany that it was the first time he picked up a girl from a bar. Coincidentally, last night was the first night I wasted three hours watching meaningless reality television instead of doing something intellectually stimulating like reading a book. Oh wait, NEITHER OF THOSE THINGS ARE EVEN REMOTELY TRUE.

• Dustin seems like the aw shucks country boy of the group, yet is hiding a secret from his roommates — he is straight, but has done gay porn. Ronnie-style, he insisted he didn’t want to date a roommate yet ended up hooking up with Heather in what appears to be a by-the-books showmance. Of course this happened.

• Heather is from a town near my hometown in South Jersey, so I can’t tell if I am predisposed to love or hate her. She seems nice, so I’m going to go with “love” until further notice.

• Leroy is kind of intimidating. He has a really deep voice, and personally I find it really difficult to look into the eyes of a person with abs that chiseled. He appears to love the ladies, and the ladies appear to love him back. They at least seem pleased with the opportunity to do laundry on his stomach.

Side note: He is a trash man in real life! That is the best, most un-glamorous job ever.

• Finally, we have Michael. Michael, Michael, Michael. He’s the innocent Christian of the season, who only lost his virginity a few months ago and tries to woo trashy chicks he brings back from the club with prayer. I can’t decide whether he’s adorable or creepily naieve. I’m leaning toward adorable, but I can’t help but feel a little secondhand embarrassment watching him try to keep up with the cool kids he’s rooming with.

The premiere episode antics might’ve been shocking at one point in time, but seeing attractive people party and bring randoms home to their sweet-ass suite is old hat by now. Plus, you really know what you’re getting into when you realize that these are the types of people who wear their sunglasses at night. Also, Leroy and Adam both participated in (separate) three-way kisses. Is that still a thing? I guess only on MTV reality shows.

However, Dustin’s “I want you to make mistakes so you can learn from them” speech to Michael was the most oddly convincing argument for sin that I’ve ever heard. Sign me up!

But, really, I already watch one show about twentysomethings hooking up in nightclubs and then hooking up later in hot tubs. Do I really need another? ‘Real World Las Vegas’ round two is at least better than the snooze-fest of ‘DC,’ but they’ve got to throw some sort of plot device in the mix to keep me tuning in.

‘The Real World Las Vegas’ airs at 10PM ET on MTV.

What did you think of the premiere? Can ‘The Real World’ find a way to prove its worth in a post-’Jersey Shore’ universe?

Real World LV Recap: Rock Hard in the Hard Rock! – CMR

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

Advertisement:

Folks! MTV brings Real World back to Las Vegas for the silver anniversary and the 25th season premiere has things already heating up! The new cast includes: Adam Royer (Player, 22, Portland, ME), Dustin Zito (Porn Star, 24, Rayne, LA), Leroy Garrett (Male Ho, 25, Detroit, MI), Michael Ross (Bible Beater, 23, Nokesville, VA), Heather Marter  (Charmer, 21, Delran, NJ), Nany Gonzalez (Taken, 21, Jamestown, NY), and Naomi Defensor (Firecracker, 22, Bronx, NY). The first to meet are Nany and Adam who seem to hit it off right from the start at the airport with Adam making his pitch about how he just graduated with a degree in criminology…more like a history with the criminal justice system…while Nany explaining she is majoring in Criminal Justice and wants to be a probation officer! She makes it abundantly clear she is in a committed relationship of six years but came to Las Vegas to explore possibilities since she feels something is missing. Will her relationship with boyfriend, Jordy, survive?

Michael meets Heather in the Hard Rock Hotel penthouse which is where the cast will be spending their time while in Las Vegas. The penthouse is pimped out with Jacuzzi, bowling lane, and a view to die for! Michael confides in Heather that he is going to be the “Yes” man meaning if there is something he normally wouldn’t do, he is going to say yes to it. Throughout this first episode, audiences were probably wondering when that was going to take effect as he sat on the edge of his bed with two chicks from the bar and read a prayer. Leroy was not feeling the love for Michael who obviously has no game! The late bloomer only just recently lost his virginity!

Leroy, on the other hand, displayed no shame or ability to hold back game as he brings several women back to the penthouse the first night. Kinda reminds you of what goes on at Jersey Shore with Vinny, The Situation, and Pauly D! Leroy, however, is the sum total of all three of the Jersey guys! Player Adam states he has a thing for Nany and tries to woo her by laying the lines about how he is so shy around pretty girls and then lays the same line on Jeanice the next day at lunch! Previews of shows to come have Nany and Adam hooking up and going at one another in much the same way as Ronnie and Sammi from South Shore in Jersey! Would it be too much to ask for original storylines?

Dustin talks about how he is not going to hook up with a housemate but finds himself drawn to Heather who he falls into bed with almost immediately while playing the “pick-up game” with the guys! Dustin reveals a little about his tainted pornographic past to the viewers but realizes as he gets involved with Heather, he is going to have to let the “cat out of the bag.” He was on an Internet reality show called “Frat Pad” with a bunch of guys, nude and involved. Was this when he was involved in the threesome, kissed a member of the same sex, AND had hot tub sex? Is one of the secrets he will divulge is he is bisexual?

Naomi and Leroy seem suited for one another as the most intelligent and mature of the group even though they display the propensity for all out “spring break” behavior. The next few weeks will determine how all this plays out as the roommates uncover secrets and slide under the covers. The Hard Rock is about to get rocked hard!
