Big Ten Tournament Has College Basketball Gamblers Interested Today – Casino Gambling Web

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

USA Players Accepted at Rome Casino!

There are two times a year when sports books in Las Vegas are at their busiest, in February for the Super Bowl, and in March for college basketball’s March Madness. The madness has already begun this year, and today the attention shifts to the Big Ten Tournament.

Earlier in the week some of the smaller conferences completed their tournaments, crowing champions and sending Cinderella teams off to the big dance. This weekend, however, gamblers will be betting on teams that they are more familiar with as the big conference tourneys got underway this afternoon.

One tournament that gamblers will be keeping an eye on is the Big Ten tourney. Ohio State has been considered by many to be the best team in the conference, and they are the betting favorite this week. The Buckeyes have odds of 4/7 to win the tournament and secure a number one seed in the NCAA Tournament in the process.

Two other teams are ranked in the top twenty-five heading into this week’s games. Purdue is the number nine team in the country,m and that is good enough to make the Boilermakers the second choice of odds makers. The number thirteen Wisconsin Badgers are the third choice, and they are one of only two teams to defeat Ohio State this season.

Michigan and Illinois are two teams that could surprise bettors and pull the upset to win the tournament. The Wolverines and Fighting Illini, however, appear to be heading in different directions. Michigan has won eight of their past eleven games, while Illinois won only nine of their last twenty games.

The conference tournaments will continue throughout the day Thursday, Friday, and into the weekend. The tournaments will wrap up on Saturday and Sunday, with selections for the NCAA Tournament coming after all of the conference tourney’s are complete.

Christina Aguilera arrested for drunkenness

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. – Authorities say Christina Aguilara’s boyfriend has been released from jail, hours after he was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving and the singer was taken to a West Hollywood jail until she sobered up.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore says 25-year-old Matthew Rutler was stopped near the Sunset Strip after he burned rubber and fishtailed onto a street Tuesday morning with Aguilara in the car.

Whitmore says Rutler’s blood-alcohol content was 0.09 percent — just slightly above the legal limit. He was freed after posting $5,000 bail.

Aguilera was freed earlier. She was arrested on suspicion of being publicly drunk, but Whitmore says it was out of concern for her safety and she won’t be prosecuted.

Calls to the singer’s agent and her publicist were not returned. Sheriff’s officials didn’t know if Rutler has hired an attorney.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP’s earlier story is below.

Fresh from a stumble at the Grammys and muffing the national anthem at the Super Bowl, singer Christina Aguilera was arrested early Tuesday near the Sunset Strip on suspicion of being drunk in public but will not be prosecuted, authorities said.

Aguilera, 30, was “extremely intoxicated” when a car driven by her boyfriend was stopped at about 2:45 a.m. on Clark Street, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Deputy Bill McSweeney said.

The car was stopped just off the Sunset Strip, not far from such famous nightspots as Whiskey A Go-Go and the Viper Room.

The driver, Matthew Rutler, 25, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and jailed on $5,000 bail, sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore said.

Aguilera was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public so that she could be held at the West Hollywood sheriff’s station, Whitmore said.

“She was cooperative. She was not belligerent in any way whatsoever,” Whitmore said.

He did not know much the 5-foot-2, 100-pound Aguilera may have been drinking.

“She was booked, she was fingerprinted and she was put in a cell,” he said. “And then she’s monitored, and as she gets better, she begins to fend for herself, her head clears up and when she passes the sobriety test within the jail facility … that’s why we take them into custody, to protect them as well as others.”

Whitmore said that as Aguilera got better she stated that she wanted to leave.

“When she was able to navigate and think on her own … she was released,” he said.

Aguilera was released from the back of the station at about 7:30 a.m., avoiding a cluster of paparazzi out front. A friend drove her home, Whitmore said.

Aguilera was arrested because she appeared too drunk to care for herself and had no driver to take her home, McSweeney said.

The law allows deputies to detain intoxicated people for their own welfare until they sober up but there is no intention to prosecute them, he said.

“You’re sitting in a car drunk. You have every legal right to be there but when we come across you we say you can’t drive and we’re not going to put you on the sidewalk,” he explained.

Aguilera won’t be charged with a crime, although the misdemeanor arrest will remain on her record, Whitmore said. “Technically it’s an arrest, but from the very beginning there was never an intention to prosecute,” he said.

Calls to Aguilera’s agent, Tracy Brennan, and her publicist, Nicole Perez, weren’t returned Tuesday.

Aguilera recently split from music executive Jordan Bratman, the father of her 3-year-old son. She filed for divorce in October and their split becomes official April 15.

Aguilera lost her footing at the Feb. 13 Grammy Awards during a tribute medley to singer Aretha Franklin. She also made headlines by botching a line while singing the national anthem at the Feb. 6 Super Bowl.

TV-commercial Visigoths visit New Orleans – NOLA.com

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

Published: Saturday, February 05, 2011, 3:22 AM

The Capital One Visigoths – you know, Garth and ‘em – have come to New Orleans.

We’ve seen worse.

And no, they’re not Vikings.

The marauding barbarians are on a long American road trip made possible – nay, affordable and pleasurable — by the benefit features of the fine credit card they carry.

Their itinerary so far has taken them to the Grand Canyon, Los Angeles (for shopping on Rodeo Drive, a yoga class and a film-studio tour) and Las Vegas.

In New Orleans, the gang masks at a ball, rigs a catapult for bead-tossing, and jams with our own Deacon John Moore.

The commercial will surely run during some of the dozens of hours of sports programming airing today on various networks, including Fox’s pregame, though probably not during the Super Bowl itself, according to a Capital One spokeswoman.

But the timing seems right to pause – on this secular national holiday devoted to the consumption of salty snacks, carbonated beverages and, above all, TV commercials – and salute the spot that’s shining a national spotlight on the city.

The Visigoths were a Germanic menace to the Roman Empire in the fourth century, then migrated to menace Italy, Gaul and Spain during the fifth, sixth and into the seventh.

They’ve been players in Capital One’s advertising since 2001, migrating in purpose as their real-life role models migrated for menace.

Early, they represented potential high interest rates and fees charged by competing credit cards. Lately, they’re on the road toting Capital One’s Venture Card. They have their own Facebook page and a presence on YouTube, though the New Orleans commercial, filmed here in the fall, isn’t posted there yet.

“New Orleans represented so much of what we wanted to convey, which is vibrancy, excitement, heritage,” said Marc Mentry, Capital One managing vice president of advertising. “There are strategic things in the ad that really also speak to how people view New Orleans. ‘I go with friends.’ ‘I go with family.’ ‘I go to Jazzfest.’ ‘I go for Mardi Gras.’ ‘I go for the restaurants’ — all of those things that are part of New Orleans and are part of what we’re trying to convey about the Venture Card. ‘Go with others, use this card, earn (rewards) faster.’

“It’s a perfect fit with a place we’re passionate about and are a part of. It speaks instantly to consumers as, ‘Yep, that’s a place I want to be a part of.’”

Two iconic scenes ended up on the cutting-room floor, Mentry said. One was shot at Café du Monde that involved a powdered-sugar catastrophe. The other was an encounter with spicy cuisine at Arnaud’s.

“We had more fun material with the city than we could fit in a 30-second spot,” he said. “It was a great experience.”

As it was for Moore, who’s been featured in national commercials before. He landed this one via audition.

“It’s a crapshoot,” he said. “You do the audition and hope you get a call back. Then they don’t call you. The thing about being in that business, you have to be able to handle rejection. If you don’t get it, there’s another one coming along, just like streetcars.”

This time, he caught a ride on the Visigoth road trip.

“They just liked the way I said, ‘What’s in your wallet?’” he said.

In fact, the spot’s catch phrase has become part of Moore’s life in New Orleans.

“Everywhere I go, if I’m on a gig, everybody asks me what’s in my wallet,” he said, adding that he answers from the bandstand by calling for Barrett Strong’s “Money.” “It’s part of my act now. I’ll never live it down!”

Moore said the highlight of the shoot was witnessing diva-like behavior by one of the cast’s goats, who was ultimately sacked in favor of an understudy.

“I love the work,” Moore said. “There’s nothing to carry. No amplifiers, no speakers. You show up and everybody pampers you. You get your wardrobe, get your hair done. They come and pick you up and drive you around and feed you all day long.

“You feel like a star.”

NFL Scouting Combines: How Smart Are You? Time to Take the Wonderlic Test – Bleacher Report

Monday, February 28th, 2011

Here are some current and former NFL quarterback scores from the Wonderlic exam, listed in alphabetical order. If more than one score is listed, it is because they took the exam twice. This is rocket science folks.

Derek Anderson (19), Jeff Blake (17), Kyle Boller (27), Jason Campbell (23), Jay Cutler (26), Ryan Fitzpatrick (38), Rex Grossman (29), Matt Leinart (35), Eli Manning (39), Dan Marino (13), Donovan McNabb (16, 12), Steve McNair (15), Carson Palmer (26), Philip Rivers (30), Aaron Rodgers (35), Ben Roethlisberger (25), Tony Romo (37), Matt Schaub (31), Alex Smith (40), Kordell Stewart (12) and Vince Young (6).

Interesting to note that the Super Bowl QB’s were in our sample of scores. Big Ben had a 25, while Aaron Rodgers came up 35, showing that he was better on and off the field.

Highest score of the above group:  Alex Smith with a 40. A 50 score is perfect by the way. It is rumored that Ryan Fitzpatrick tanked a few questions, so the Harvard grad wouldn’t come across as too smart for his own good.

Las Vegas Still Trumps Los Angeles for Most Expensive NBA All-Star Game and … – Forbes (blog)

Sunday, February 20th, 2011

Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, Uni...

Image via Wikipedia

Though much of the story around the 2007 NBA All-Star Game in Las Vegas centered around off-court malfeasance and whether the NBA could make it in Sin City, there’s still no question that Vegas is the King of Bling among U.S. cities.

And secondary ticket price comparisons from the last few NBA All-Star Games seems to support this supposition.

Currently for Sunday’s NBA All-Star Game in Los Angeles, the average ticket price according to my source at StubHub is $1,174.  The cheapest ticket available is $545.

In comparison to the last 4 NBA All-Star Games:

o    $192 in 2010 at Cowboy Stadium in Arlington (as discussed in an earlier piece, the price was significantly less because they sat over 100,000 people);

o    $789 in 2009 at US Airways Center in Phoenix;

o    $605 in 2008 at New Orleans Arena;

o    $2,546 in 2007 at Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas.

In short, the Vegas game was 216% more expensive than this year’s game in L.A.

Regarding NBA All-Star Saturday which includes the Slam Dunk competition as well as the 3-point shooting contest:

·          $647 average secondary price on StubHub for tonight’s contest featuring hometown hero and event favorite Blake Griffin of the L.A. Clippers.  $295 is the lowest secondary price on StubHub.

Comparatively for recent past All-Star Saturdays:

o    $552 in 2010 at American Airlines Center in Dallas (notice how the price rises in Dallas when you put the event in an arena of similar size to the others);

o    $626 in 2009 at US Airways Center in Phoenix;

o    $382 in 2008 at New Orleans Arena (New Orleans being less expensive both for this and the game itself likely reflects the less-affluent nature of the New Orleans economy);

o    $1,534 in 2007 at Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas.

Hence, a 237% premium of 2007’s Slam Dunk competition over tonight’s.

Long story short, hosting the NBA All-Star Game in Las Vegas was truly a novelty and the prices reflected this.

Unfortunately, some of the shenanigans that occurred during their All-Star weekend off-court not only hurt Vegas’ chances of hosting the game anytime in the near future but also was a public relations nightmare.

So much so that the league would have to think even longer and harder than they already were about the possibility of ever bringing an NBA franchise to Vegas.

A final note.  There are over 25 buyer states for the 2010-11 game in Los Angeles.  The breakdown is CA (52%), NY (11%), IN (6%), OH (5%), and LA, PA, and IL with 4% each.  In this respect, it’s interesting to note that for both the Super Bowl and for the NBA All-Star Game, 2 of the 3 top ‘buyer states’ for each event was CA and NY.
