MTV’s ‘The Real World’ launches its 25th season! Crazy!

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

Vegas

This is the true story … of seven [or eight] strangers … picked to live in a house … work together and have their lives taped … to find out what happens … when people stop being polite … and start getting real … “The Real World.”

“Let’s be honest, it not the ‘real’ world,” said Judd Winick, 41, who appeared in the San Francisco-set third season of the long-running MTV series. “But within the context of living in a luxury house with strangers while cameras follow you … real things do happen.”

And for nearly two decades, viewers have been tuning in to watch it all unfold.

“I watched the show when I was in high school!” said Trishelle Cannatella, 31, whose drunken antics and pregnancy scare were highlighted in the first Las Vegas season in 2002.  “I remember the Los Angeles season with Tami shouting,  ‘It wasn’t not funny!’”

Now “The Real World” is launching its 25th season Wednesday night with a return to Las Vegas.“It’s truly amazing that we’re still here,” said Jonathan Murray, who, along with the late Mary-Ellis Bunim, created the show. “As long as people keep tuning in, we have no plans to stop.”

Alums of the show are surprised by its longevity.

“I never would have thought it would still be going,” said 31-year-old Julie Rogers, formerly Stoffer, whose Mormon beliefs were tested in the show’s first visit to New Orleans in 2000. “It’s unbelievable to me. Truly. And it’s weirder that I was on a DECADE ago. Where did the time go?”

One need only look to the scores of cities the show has visited to be reminded. From San Francisco and Seattle to Hollywood and New York.

In its early years, “The Real World” aimed to capture intensely personal dramas while also bringing to the forefront hot-bottom topics such as race, AIDS, abortion and addiction.

“It’s almost like a college experience,” said David Burns,  33, who appeared in the Seattle season and is now the managing director of advertising for Los Angeles Times Media Group. “You’re realizing things about yourself that you never really thought about along with people your own age. But, you know, things have changed since I was on.”

The shift can mostly be traced back to a hot tub and some sexually charged roommates during the show’s first stay in Las Vegas in 2002.

“You’re in Vegas,” said Cannatella, who is now a professional poker player signed with Absolut Poker. “What else are you supposed to do?”

There are not a lot of options when living in a controlled setting monitored by a nearby crew.

“One time ‘The Real World: Chicago’ was on in a TV in a bathroom,” Cannatella said. “I was in there and the mic must have been on because the crew busted in. They did not want me watching it. But from the little I saw, I was so worried that I would be considered this season’s Tanya. That was my biggest fear.”

Because despite all the time that has passed, the show follows its alums.

“I will always be known as ‘the dude who was on ‘The Real World,’ “ said Ryan Conklin, a young Army veteran who was redeployed during the Brooklyn season in 2009. “It could be worse. I’m not carrying around the shame of being a child molester or something.”

For the new cast taking the baton, Burns had this bit of advice:

“Look at the show for what it is. Enjoy yourself while you’re on the show, but continue to work hard toward your career and your true passions. The way someone edits you on a  show isn’t going to equal you anything.”

Tragedy: Former Alice In Chains bassist Mike Starr was found dead today

Tragedy: Former Alice In Chains bassist Mike Starr was found dead today

Former Alice In Chains bassist Mike Starr has been found dead in Utah.

A spokesman for the Salt Lake City Police Department said officers responded to a call about a possible body at a residence earlier in the afternoon.

‘There is nothing to indicate that this was foul play by another individual,’ the spokesman said.

The medical examiner’s office will likely conduct an autopsy on Wednesday, but the results of toxicology tests could take up to two months.

The 44-year-old musician had appeared on the third season of Celebrity Rehab with Dr Drew Pinsky, back in 2009, where he was treated for addiction to heroin at the Pasedena Recovery Centre.

He then appeared on the spin-off show Sober House, documenting his stay at a sober living facility following his rehabilitation.

Just last month Starr was arrested by police in Utah for an outstanding warrant and found to be in possession of a controlled substance – six pills of the sleep medication Opana and six pills of Xanax, an anti anxiety drug.

His father told U.S. website TMZ, of his passing: ‘It is a terrible shock and tragedy.’

Mike began his career in the late 1980′s as the bass player for a band called Diamond Lie, which later became Alice In Chains.

The band became famous in the early 1990′s as part of the grunge movement but he was kicked out of the band for his drug addiction in 1992.

In 1994, he was sentenced to 90 days in a Texas jail for stealing a piece of luggage at the Houston Intercontinental Airport.

In 2002, the band’s singer Layne Staley was found dead from an overdose in his Seattle apartment.

Tiki Barber, Jim Brown and the older back – ESPN (blog)

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

Tiki Barber‘s comeback hopes at age 35 cannot touch the time Jim Brown threatened to come back in his late 40s, when an aging Franco Harris was challenging his rushing record.

Brown was 29 when he played his final snap, then retired while still dominant. He had the right idea.

Very few backs have remained productive into their 30s. The chart below shows running backs from current NFC West franchises who carried at least 50 times in a season past age 31, according to Pro Football Reference. I limited the search to the past 35 seasons (the newest current NFC West franchise, Seattle, entered the NFL in 1976).

It’s a short list featuring seven players, including three legends finishing their careers wearing unfamiliar uniforms (Emmitt Smith in Arizona, O.J. Simpson in San Francisco and Franco Harris in Seattle).

None gained 1,000 yards in a season even though all played in the 16-game schedule era — an era Brown ridiculed for this marvelous 1983 Sports Illustrated piece discussing his comeback threat. In it, Brown said Harris might break his record if he kept running out bounds frequently enough to prolong his career. The best quote from Brown, by far, makes me wonder what Brown must think of the current NFL game:

“Where has the danger in the game gone? I can’t accept quarterbacks sliding and running backs running out of bounds. Ever since the merger in 1966 and the creation of the Super Bowl, the owners have been more concerned with ratings than the level of the game. Coaches put up with players waving into TV cameras, giving high fives and spiking the ball. That sells. The Monday Night Football broadcasters have become bigger than the game. Who is kidding whom? Who’s to say a 47-year-old can’t do it? I’m not talking about being Jim Brown of 1965. I’m talking about being Jim Brown of 1984. If Franco Harris is gonna creep to my record, I might as well come back and creep, too.”

Barber, for the record, ranks 22nd on the NFL’s all-time rushing list. He’s within 200 yards of passing Watters for the 20th spot. Watters rushed for 1,242 yards at age 31 and still appeared to have quite a bit left, but the Seahawks had drafted Shaun Alexander and Watters wasn’t interested in a situational role.
