The IUD Makes a Comeback

Monday, December 12th, 2011

SATURDAY morning was come, and all the summer world was bright and fresh, and brimming with life. There was a song in every heart; and if the heart was young the music issued at the lips. There was cheer in every face and a spring in every step. The locust-trees were in bloom and the fragrance of the blossoms filled the air. Cardiff Hill, beyond the village and above it, was green with vegetation and it lay just far enough away to seem a Delectable Land, dreamy, reposeful, and inviting.

Tom appeared on the sidewalk with a bucket of whitewash and a long-handled brush. He surveyed the fence, and all gladness left him and a deep melancholy settled down upon his spirit. Thirty yards of board fence nine feet high. Life to him seemed hollow, and existence but a burden. Sighing, he dipped his brush and passed it along the topmost plank; repeated the operation; did it again; compared the insignificant whitewashed streak with the far-reaching continent of unwhitewashed fence, and sat down on a tree-box discouraged. Jim came skipping out at the gate with a tin pail, and singing Buffalo Gals. Bringing water from the town pump had always been hateful work in Tom eyes, before, but now it did not strike him so. He remembered that there was company at the pump. White, mulatto, and negro boys and girls were always there waiting their turns, resting, trading playthings, quarrelling, fighting, skylarking.

image: St. Patrick's DayHave you heard someone say they are going green because it’s the “right” thing to do?  When you ask them what exactly the “right” thing is, they mention because “it’s good for the environment”.  As a green living consultant, I’m all for being good to the environment; however, what I’ve noticed in our sustainability consulting is that “being good for the environment” doesn’t translate well into tangible, practical pieces of information that people can use in their daily lives.  The statement, “it’s good for the environment” is just too big, too conceptual, it means different things to different people and it lacks personalization.

So, what does being good to the environment really mean? Within our personal sustainability programs, we break it down to a personal level.  In doing so, it’s easier to connect the dots between an eco action and the associated environmental benefit.  The result?  Clear knowledge of how and why that action is good for the environment versus a blank, overarching statement. Let’s take St. Patrick’s Day  as an example.  How can we translate the concept of being good to the environment into tangible, lasting eco behavior?

Let’s take a look at what each clover on a 4 leaf clover looks like as a sustainability concept transformed.

Hope:  Hope is a belief in a positive outcome related to events and circumstances in ones life.   With the over saturation of negative media today, it’s easy to lose sight of good things to come.  Identify areas in your life or business or personal life that have an environmental impact and that you are also willing to change and improve.  Look at going paperless at home or in your office, perhaps improving air quality or maybe start recycling.  These changes don’t have to be hard or cumbersome, create an expectation of ease of transition using hope.  Hope for good things to come in your life, work, and for the environment.

Faith:  Faith is the confident belief in the truth of or trustworthiness of a person, idea, or thing.   Focus your attention with anticipation of a positive outcome.  Stretch your imagination and take action.   If you started a paperless program or energy efficiency program as part of your sustainability plan, then start looking for the savings on a monthly and quarterly basis.  Intangible benefits that aren’t as easily measured may be the first evidence of taking action based on faith: improved employee morale, stakeholder impressions changing for the better or family members and neighbors feeling good about taking environmental action.

Love: Find appreciation in what is working in your life and your business.  Have you noticed that what you focus on expands?  Why not appreciate a job well done?  Share and reach out in your community.  Businesses extend latitude towards customers and vendors.   Love your life, your business, and love our planet.

Luck:  Create your own pot of gold.  The actions we take today create our tomorrow.  Invest in sustainability concepts in your business and your life for a better tomorrow:  waste reduction, energy efficiency, recycling programs, water conservation, community involvement, sustainable businesses practices, living a sustainable lifestyle and invest in socially responsible investing.  Throughout my professional consulting career, I’ve found holidays to be a great way to integrate sustainability concepts not only into your own life, but also into the lives of others.   Happy St. Patrick’s Day to you!

Charlie Sheen Joins Twitter Post 20/20 Interview: Who is He Following? – Gather Celebs News Channel

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

Charlie Sheen joined Twitter and his account is growing steadily. But who is the estranged Two and a Half Men star @CharlieSheen following after the 20/20 interview?

He only became a verified member of the Twitter-sphere on Tuesday, but already his follower count on the social media site has swelled to nearly 700K.

Charlie Sheen joins Twitter After 20/20 Interview– Who is followed first?

That’s impressive, and is reminiscent of a few years back when Ashton Kutcher made the push to be the first celeb to eclipse 1,000,000 Twitter followers.

The trouble is Sheen’s only following 16 people, but that’s up from the ten he was following just a short time ago.

It appears that he followed Bob Maron first. Get this: the link to his page is Maron.com. If you click on the link, it takes you to a watch site. Yea, you don’t get it either. Perhaps, the Two and a Half Men star, who “drips tiger blood,” is always on time.

Charlie Sheen joins Twitter after 20/20 Interview– Who are his next followers among the sixteen?

This should be an easy guess; he follows his live-in porn star gal pal, Bree Olson, one of his two “goddess friends”. That’s another story. BTW, she’s available for bookings. Go figure.

Third was Omid Ashtari. The connection is not known, but he is a prolific tweeter on Twitter.

Fourth is Chris Ovitz, who is the Director of Business Development at ad.ly. The company is said to make connections for celebrities with lucrative Twitter endorsement opportunities. Before Charlie Sheen joined Twitter, he was unemployed. It’s not like he can’t use the cash.

Then, he followed Alyssa Milano (what’s up with that?). It turns out that she, like Charlie Sheen, loves baseball. Hopefully, he doesn’t take her “out to the ballgame.” Thank goodness she wasn’t mentioned in the Charlie Sheen 20/20 interview.

Sheen then followed the shock-jock himself, Howard Stern. Perhaps, after Charlie Sheen joined Twitter, Stern gave him lessons on how to keep the peace with his “goddess” bosom buddies.
