LAS CRUCES – With the beginning of daylight saving time this weekend, the Las Cruces Fire Department is encouraging residents to install fresh batteries and test their smoke detectors – or smoke alarms – as they spring ahead one hour.
Approximately 5,500 people die from fire every year in this country. This averages out to about 15 people a day.
Daylight saving time begins at 2 a.m. Sunday and continues until Nov. 6.
Fire officials encourage residents to install new batteries and test all smoke alarms. To check the operation of a smoke detector, simply press and hold the device’s “test” button. If it beeps, or rings loudly, it’s working properly.
Although smoke alarms are present in 95 percent of American homes, national studies show that as many as 20 percent of those alarms may not work due to worn or missing batteries.
