“The King’s Speech” is top amongst SAG award winners.
The 2011 SAG awards were handed out last night in a ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday. “The Social Network,” Best Picture winner at the Golden Globes, walked away empty-handed while its Best Picture rival, “The King’s Speech,” won for Best Ensemble, SAG’s equivalent of Best Picture.
Among the other notable SAG award winners was Betty White, who continues her career revival by taking home the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series for her role in “Hot in Cleveland.” Her appearance in a Super Bowl ad earlier this year led to a Facebook campaign to have her host SNL. Jesse Eisenberg, who was not among one of the SAG award winners, hosted the live television show on Saturday.
An Oscar showdown appears to be set in place as Hollywood vetaran Annette Bening (“The Kids Are All Right”) was snubbed by Natalie Portman, who walked away with Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for her portrayal of a ballerina-gone-mad in Darren Arronofsky’s “Black Swan.” Both are nominated for Best Actress in this month’s Academy Awards, reports CBS News.
Christian Bale was honored for his portrayal of Dicky Eklund in “The Fighter,” as was his co-star Melissa Leo for Actor in a Supporting Role and Actress in a Supporting role, respectively.
Morgan Freeman presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to Ernest Borgnine, the actor best known for his role in “McHale’s Navy” and his Academy Award winning role in “Marty.”
