Poor Princeton. The Tigers aren’t destitute in the traditional sense, of course. But as the “real” NCAA tournament gets into full swing, the Ivy League champs are in a most unfortunate spot: facing talented, red-hot Kentucky in their opener.
After struggling to win on the road for much of the season, the young Wildcats appear to be figuring things out, blowing through the Southeastern Conference tournament. They’re widely considered to be underseeded as a No. 4, although that was just one of many arguable gaffes by this year’s selection committee.
Every year, the matchup between the Ivy League champion and whoever is one of the highlights of the opening weekend, even though the Ivy representative rarely wins. Cornell ended the conference’s 11-year tournament losing streak by reaching the Sweet 16 last season, but then was summarily dismissed … by Kentucky. Princeton is coming off of its thrilling, buzzer-beater victory over Harvard in the Ivy’s one-game playoff, but the odds of the Ivy topping Big Blue are once again long.
