Egypt’s military rulers dissolve parliament
CAIRO (AP) – Egypt’s military leaders dissolved parliament and suspended the constitution Sunday, meeting two key demands of protesters who have been keeping up pressure for immediate steps to transition to democratic, civilian rule after forcing Hosni Mubarak out of power. The military rulers that took over when Mubarak stepped down Friday and the caretaker government also set as a top priority the restoration of security, which collapsed during the 18 days of protests that toppled the regime.

WASHINGTON (AP) – An administration official says President Barack Obama is proposing to cut $100 billion over a decade from the Pell Grant program through belt-tightening, but use the savings to keep the maximum college financial aid award at $5,550. Most of the projected savings, more than $90 billion, would be achieved through two changes would require congressional approval.
Emirates’ exiles in spotlight after Mubarak fall
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) – For political figures in exile, the United Arab Emirates has been a luxury refuge, a base for plotting attempted comebacks and – for at least one unable to escape assassins – a final stage. There is no shortage of speculation that Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak could join the list. The Dubai-based network Al-Arabiya reported Saturday that the former Egyptian president was making plans to head to the Emirates. A Kuwait daily, Al-Qabas, said Friday that UAE officials have offered Mubarak haven in Al Ain, a desert city near the Omani border.

NATO: 740 trainers still needed for Afghan forces
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) – More nations are pledging support, yet NATO still faces a shortage of 740 trainers needed to get Afghan soldiers and policemen ready to take the lead in securing their nation, the coalition’s top training official says. Needed most are 290 police trainers, including those to work in new training centers opening in Afghanistan this year, U.S. Lt. Gen. William Caldwell, the commander of NATO’s training mission, told The Associated Press in an interview Saturday.

Police: Man kills 4 in stabbing rampage across NYC
NEW YORK (AP) – It apparently began, police said, when a 23-year-old graffiti artist asked his mother if he could drive her Lexus. She said no. The ensuing fight between them escalated into a bloody 28-hour rampage across New York City as the man – armed with five knives – fatally stabbed his stepfather, ex-girlfriend and her mother, ran down a pedestrian in a stolen car, and slashed and wounded four other people before being arrested in a Times Square subway station, police said.
Eminem looks to win elusive album of year Grammy
LOS ANGELES (AP) – With his 10 nominations, Eminem has the potential to sweep Sunday night’s Grammy Awards – as well as win that elusive album of the year trophy, a category for which he’s had three nominations but never a win. His favored “Recovery” was 2010′s best-selling album of the year and marked a major comeback for Eminem, who had been addled by a prescription drug addiction and critical malaise.
LA County probes Playboy Mansion illness reports
LOS ANGELES (AP) – Health officials on Saturday were investigating complaints of respiratory illnesses that a media report said affected dozens of people after a fundraiser at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles that was part of a larger conference. The Department of Public Health issued a statement Saturday saying only that it was investigating a suspected respiratory infection outbreak among attendees of a conference on the west side of Los Angeles County.
Kurt Busch wins Shootout after Hamlin disqualified
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) – It was a two-car tango at Daytona International Speedway, where the wild, pack racing was replaced Saturday night by sizzling fast speeds and a strange ending that gave Kurt Busch the win in the Budweiser Shootout. The exhibition race was the first test on Daytona’s smooth new pavement, and speeds at times hit 206 mph in a race that had a record 28 lead changes among nine drivers.
