Keith Olbermann to Join Current TV: Report

NEW YORK (TheStreet) — Keith Olbermann on Tuesday could announce a deal with public affairs channel Current TV in a telephone conference in which he is expected to disclose his future plans.

The former host of MSNBC’s prime-time news and political commentary show Countdown with Keith Olbermann left the network last month after the network said it and Olbermann “ended their contract” two years early.

While Olbermann’s announcement may have come as a surprise to many viewers, the host and MSNBC were apparently involved “in a relationship [that had] been failing for a long time,” an executive with NBC Universal said. Now Olbermann may join Current TV, a satellite television channel founded in 2005 by former Vice President Al Gore and Joel Hyatt, the Wall Street Journal reports citing a person familiar with the matter.

Reports claim that Olbermann could also pursue a possible Internet venture or radio deal. MSNBC, now owned by Comcast(CMCSA), reportedly awarded Olbermann a $7 million settlement through which he agreed not to join any rival television networks for several months following his departure. However the non-compete contract doesn’t apply to Current TV, sources told the Journal. TheOlbermannShow.com Internet domain name was registered two days before his departure from MSNBC, the Journal reports. Upon leaving the network Olbermann reportedly told his coworkers that he was planning to move online. –Written by Theresa McCabe in Boston. >To contact the writer of this article, click here: Theresa McCabe. >To follow the writer on Twitter, go to @TheresaMcCabe. >To submit a news tip, send an email to: tips@thestreet.com.
